00:00:27:10 - 00:00:50:21
DINO
And good afternoon. And when I start this Los Angeles, welcome back to another episode of The Signal. News, information and analysis. I'm your host, Dino. And, yeah. We're back. And before we get into it, of course, it goes without saying that we want to thank all of you, not only on this program, but across the network and across this station.
00:00:50:23 - 00:01:27:21
DINO
Who supported this vitally important, broadcast operation we call home. You call home the Pacifica Radio Network. And here in the Los Angeles signal broadcast area on 90.7 FM, and all. And thank all our listeners, Santa Barbara and San Diego and Ridgecrest, China Lake, and of course, all across L.A. County and beyond. So again, thank you. And you can continue to learn more on how to support this station and all of these independent, public radio community broadcast stations on our website at kpfk.org.
00:01:27:23 - 00:02:01:05
DINO
So yeah, today, today we're going to take a different approach to our program because I'm calling it the Final Pitch. You know, we're on Election Day weekend. You know, election's been a buzz everywhere you go. And for us in the political punditry world, which this broadcast is, you know, whether it's with my producer or engineer or other folks who, come by for the show, all we talk about here is politics, right?
00:02:01:05 - 00:02:27:16
DINO
So we're there. The final weekend, the election is around the corner, and we're going to take some time to revisit some candidates. But before we do so, we're going to go back to Sacramento. So that we can check in on where things are. I think governor's race. Right. So Election Day again, a few days away, and we're officially in crunch time.
00:02:27:16 - 00:02:50:12
DINO
And it's part of our ongoing political series, politics, Tacos and Beer. We're bringing you the special election edition. We're calling the Final Pitch. Over the last several months, we've welcome candidates from across Southern California to discuss the issues, share the priorities, explain why they believe they are the right choice for the public office they're seeking. We are even going to open up a few lines.
00:02:50:12 - 00:03:15:14
DINO
And I want to hear from you, all our listeners who you're voting for and why. So, you know, you're going to be able to call us at 985573588189855735. And a little later in the hour, we'll be taking calls intermittently. Make sure you hit option one to take you straight to the studio. Again. So we did send out, you know, we'll be looking forward to having you join us a little later in the hour.
00:03:15:14 - 00:03:43:03
DINO
But before we do that, I want to bring back, a friend of the show, Andrea Valadez, of this Sacramento reporter who has helped us, to separate the headlines from the reality. We're joined by Andrea from Gallo News. The, now, ongoing contributor to The Signal, who we really appreciate and who has been covering the governor's race and the political battles shaping California, as voters prepare to head to the polls.
00:03:43:03 - 00:03:46:10
DINO
Andrea, welcome back to The Signal.
00:03:46:12 - 00:03:48:19
ANDREA
Hey, winner. Happy to be well.
00:03:48:21 - 00:04:10:05
DINO
Girl, I know you've been busy. You've been busy because. Well, I know because I read your work and I see your work. But more importantly, this governor's race is not letting up. I know that there's a lot going on the immigration front, which has all these tentacles that play into the elections. But, you know, let's let's start off, on this election issue.
00:04:10:05 - 00:04:19:11
DINO
Right. So, yeah. Where are we? Who are the front runners and what should we be expecting in the next couple of days?
00:04:19:12 - 00:04:40:00
ANDREA
Yeah. So this race, to say the least, has been wild from the beginning. Right. But we're finally starting to see some front runners showing up. So I actually wanted to talk about two polls that, you know, one of them just came up this morning, showing how had the fed once again, the front runner, they're showing him at 28%.
00:04:40:02 - 00:05:06:10
ANDREA
And then interestingly, all of the polls that have been coming out in the last month or so have shown Tom Steyer, Democrat and Steve Nelson, Republican, kind of fighting for that second spot. And this new poll from this morning was no different. This one shows Tom Steyer in second place and Steve Hilton in third. So there there's still a tossup who's going to get those top two spots come Tuesday night election night.
00:05:06:12 - 00:05:10:13
ANDREA
But it's looking like how many visitors are definitely going to have one of them okay.
00:05:10:13 - 00:05:41:22
DINO
So this is okay. This is good to know because at one point a couple of months back through your reporting and others, what were what we heard and rather prominently was that Steve Hilton had somewhat edged out some of the other spots. Other folks were starting spot number two. But I got to say, you know, when it comes down to the, the interweb or net wars and television, I've certainly seen a lot more of steyer's, material broadcast across and he's clearly spending a lot of money on there.
00:05:41:22 - 00:05:56:05
DINO
So at this point, it looks like there and Steyer may very well be the two, although it's still a toss up. Do you know where the toss up is? Is it among Latino voters or general voters, or the general population in general?
00:05:56:07 - 00:06:16:12
ANDREA
It's looking like society really needs to get Ahold of those young voters, right, to kind of edge out the that are just to gain a couple more points. Yeah. Young voters, Latino voters. Again, very powerful group there. Those two groups are who, candidates are really fighting for, right now.
00:06:16:14 - 00:06:53:04
DINO
Okay. And so and one of the issues that continuously has come up through the the first part of the campaign has been this issue of immigration. And one of your more recent articles on Carlo remind us, Carlo News.com or is it Caloocan? I should point Carlo News.com, I should probably know that. But so one of the more recent articles focused on the wave of immigration bills that advanced through the California Senate, including measures aimed at expanding protections for immigrant communities and limiting certain federal immigration enforcement activities in the state.
00:06:53:06 - 00:07:00:20
DINO
How significant is this package of of legislation politically, that you were writing about? Tell us more about that.
00:07:00:22 - 00:07:30:19
ANDREA
Yeah. Well, I mean, of course, you know, the Assembly and the Senate both passed dozens of immigration related bills this week. A lot of things kind of repeated in both both houses, things like oversight, detention centers, accountability, making sure we don't see immigration enforcement at polling places next week. So there's there's a ton there now, once if those bills do get signed into law, there will probably be legal challenges.
00:07:30:21 - 00:07:48:06
ANDREA
But, you know, legislators told reporters last week they are ready for any legal challenges. They are confident that they can beat any challenges. So we'll just have to see. But it was a very core part of a lot of lawmakers, legislation packages this week.
00:07:48:08 - 00:07:58:23
DINO
Is there any one people in particular that stood out in your reporting that, perhaps was most contentious, most debated, most argued or most coveted?
00:07:59:01 - 00:08:38:20
ANDREA
Yes, definitely. You know, I was on the assembly floor when they were voting on these bills this past week. And like I wrote in one of my stories, the immigration bills were pretty much the only ones that had a lot of back and forth between Republicans and Democrats. Specifically, a bill titled the Gtfo Act Get the Feds Out, introduced by Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez from Los Angeles, as well as, Robert Rivas from Salinas, this bill would essentially bar anyone who's worked with Ice from 2025 to 2029, from getting a job as a police officer in the state.
00:08:38:22 - 00:08:49:09
ANDREA
Obviously a very controversial bill. A lot of Republicans had a lot of things to say about this bill, and that is certainly one of the ones that we will see face legal challenges. If it's passed.
00:08:49:11 - 00:09:05:06
DINO
So in this next in these next two days, three days, is it right? Yeah. Three days. Two and two change. What should the voters be looking out for in terms of any, Yeah. Just what should they be looking out for?
00:09:05:08 - 00:09:34:04
ANDREA
Yeah. Well, one of the most important things right now is if you have not mailed in your ballot yet, don't do that, though, in person and drop it off or vote in person. If you mail it in, it will not be counted at this point. So that's the most important thing. But secondly, you know, there's a lot of ads, there's a lot of outreach right now, a lot of voters, I mean, candidates really doing anything they can to get to convince, like you said earlier, voters that they are the best choice.
00:09:34:04 - 00:09:46:01
ANDREA
So at this point, it's really just a matter of who aligns more with what you see for the future of California. And, you know, make your choice, whatever choice you think is best for you.
00:09:46:02 - 00:10:17:02
DINO
Well, Andrea, we appreciate that. I know that this is not the last time we'll have you on, because in many regards, the race is about to begin. Yeah. I think it's fair to say that, what we saw leading up to this, particular or now, June 2nd primary is only a sign of what's to come. That big difference is going to be that instead of 4 or 5 people screaming at each other on a debate, it's not just going to be two, making for a much more interesting political period ahead of us.
00:10:17:04 - 00:10:37:12
DINO
Andrea, Valdez, thank you for joining us. Sacramento reporter for this other for this latest installment of politics, tacos and beer, helping us separate campaign noise from political reality. Stay with us. Up next, we're going to be talking to one of the candidates running for the mayor of Los Angeles. Sandra, thank you for joining us.
00:10:37:13 - 00:10:38:10
ANDREA
Thanks so much, Dina.
00:10:38:15 - 00:11:05:10
DINO
And with that, let me take a moment to, to remind everybody something that Andrea, our Sacramento reporter, just brought up on the issue of, voting news. Remember our program is, the signal news, information and analysis. And this is where the information kicks in. I want to remind everybody, as Andre pointed out at this point, do not mail in your ballot that, that ship has sailed, so to speak.
00:11:05:15 - 00:11:27:10
DINO
But what you can do is you can still vote early. In-person vote centers are open before Election Day. Vote center hours vary, but generally, from May 23rd to the first. According to the registrar's office. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. election day, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.. And that's the the very reference I made. And of course, you can vote in person on Election Day.
00:11:27:10 - 00:11:52:05
DINO
Any registered L.A. County voter can vote, at any center in the county. And you, that you are not assigned to any single voting area. So again, you can do that in person. No need to check your information. You can check your voter registration, find your nearest vote center, access your sample ballot, track your ballot, learn, voting options.
00:11:52:05 - 00:12:21:15
DINO
To do all of that, visit L.A. County Voter Information Center. Right. Helpful voting tips for all of you. Make a voting plan before you go on Election Day. Review your sample ballot ahead of time, research candidates and ballot measures from multiple sources. And, of course, vote early if possible to avoid last minute problems. Right. So with that, we're going to, keep going with our special segment on.
00:12:21:17 - 00:12:49:04
DINO
And yes, I was just reminder, you can drop off the ballot at the ballot boxes. Absolutely. We have to keep going with our second guess and a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles. This special edition of politics Goes in beer. The final pitch. And joining me now is Adam Miller, candidate for mayor of L.A.. And Adam is, a businessman, entrepreneur and candidate for the, the mayor position.
00:12:49:06 - 00:13:15:17
DINO
Mr. Miller says that the city needs practical leadership, accountability and fresh approaches to some of its biggest challenges. And today, he joins us for this final pitch, as he makes his pitch. And, Mr. Miller, I want to start off with, one of the most basic questions that I think our audience is always asking. And when we've had previous candidates on, you know, what qualifies you to serve as mayor of Los Angeles and what experiences have prepared you for this role?
00:13:15:19 - 00:13:39:16
ADAM
Well, thank you. Thank you for having me. I have been an executive for 35 years. I've run multiple companies and multiple nonprofits. I started a company in my apartment that ultimately became the largest training and development company in the world, with 3000 employees in 25 countries, and we delivered over 2 billion classes to adults, all over the world.
00:13:39:18 - 00:14:07:19
ADAM
I took those skills and experiences and applied it to the nonprofit sector, working on issues ranging from veterans services, where I created with Team Rubicon, one of the largest disaster relief organizations in the world, and the top veterans service organization in the country, I built an internship program that provided young adults in LA with over 2000 internships and apprenticeships.
00:14:07:19 - 00:14:30:11
ADAM
Wow. In the technology space. Yeah, and I had been working on homelessness for the last couple of years. And during that time created the number one homelessness prevention program that has kept over 4500 Angelinos housed who had already received eviction notices. So I know how to get things done. And that's exactly what the city needs.
00:14:30:13 - 00:14:41:17
DINO
And, Mr. Miller, if we had, you know, in one minute what how would you describe the state of the city right now?
00:14:41:19 - 00:15:08:12
ADAM
I love this city. I've been all over the city. But I will tell you that everybody agrees the city is broken. It's broken physically. Whether we're talking about streets and street lights or homeless encampments and trash. And it's broken bigger. And obviously when you talk about things like affordability and the lack thereof or public safety, people not feeling safe in their neighborhoods or even in their own homes, and we have to turn that around.
00:15:08:14 - 00:15:13:04
ADAM
And most of that, or operational problems that need to be fixed.
00:15:13:06 - 00:15:31:15
DINO
My guess is that a miller, businessman, entrepreneur and candidate for mayor of Los Angeles and Mr. Miller, with only three days remaining before Election Day, what is the most important thing voters should understand about your candidacy and why they should cast or vote for you?
00:15:31:17 - 00:15:58:05
ADAM
Look, the reality is that there's four choices for mayor and Karen Bass will advance, but there are two insiders. They've been in office for the last four years, and the city has been on a decline for the last four years. We have less than half of the entertainment industry still here. We've had businesses leave. We have homeless encampments everywhere, and people don't feel safe.
00:15:58:07 - 00:16:21:18
ADAM
So the insiders aren't going to cut it. We need an outsider. There are two outsiders. One of them channels the outrage of the city, but has no experience. And this is a complex city that has 50,000 employees reporting to the mayor and a $15 billion budget. We need somebody with the experience to operate at scale and get things done.
00:16:21:20 - 00:16:24:11
ADAM
And that's exactly why I'm running for mayor.
00:16:24:13 - 00:16:42:17
DINO
And where can the audience learn more in these final days if they want to support your campaign? Listen, to maybe interview clips or just, you know, get more information, give us your socials, give us your website as we, channel our way out, of the segment.
00:16:42:19 - 00:17:02:16
ADAM
Yeah, you can earn learn much more at volt. Miller.com talks all about my seven by seven plan for fixing the city seven specific goals with seven tactics to achieve each goal, which will start getting implemented day one. When I'm mayor and you can always find me on social media at Adam Miller LA.
00:17:02:18 - 00:17:04:11
DINO
Adam Miller business.
00:17:04:13 - 00:17:05:16
ADAM
And Adam Miller, L.A..
00:17:05:17 - 00:17:25:12
DINO
Wonderful. Adam, thank you very much. That's out of Miller, businessman, entrepreneur and candidate for mayor of Los Angeles here on the signal in our final broadcast before Election Day on June 2nd, on our special series, politics, tacos and Beer, the final Pitch. Thank you for joining us, Adam. Good luck.
00:17:25:14 - 00:17:29:00
ADAM
All right. Thank you. And remember to vote on Tuesday. Thank you.
00:17:29:02 - 00:17:47:21
DINO
Thank you. And you know, on that let me take a moment to remind all of you. Yes, indeed. We need everybody to go out and vote. But I also want to hear from you. I want to know who are you going to vote for and why? You know, this is an opportunity to hear from our audience, from the folks who support this station.
00:17:47:23 - 00:18:12:10
DINO
Of course, I want to remind you to please be respectful. We need to preserve these opportunities, and we don't need any, soap box saying or inappropriate content, but I do want to invite you all to, join us. I want to hear from you for a few minutes. We can open up the lines in 1898557358189855735.
00:18:12:10 - 00:18:38:02
DINO
Option one. And who are you voting for? Election day is a couple of days away. Now is the time to make a plan to vote. Local and state elections affect everything from housing to public safety to transportation, schools and economy. Learn about the candidates, review your ballot, and most importantly, participate. Democracy works best when all of us show up and make our voices heard.
00:18:38:02 - 00:19:02:03
DINO
So I want to know from you, the audience, the listener, the Pacific radio supporter. You know, maybe you've been listening to some of the, social media posts that come your way, or maybe some of the signage that you see, out in, and in the streets. 8189557358189855735 option one. And let me.
00:19:02:03 - 00:19:03:10
DINO
Know who.
00:19:03:10 - 00:19:34:16
DINO
You're voting for. For this primary election on June 2nd. And, and why? Right. What moved you? Is it the public safety issue? Is it the homelessness issue? These are two of the things that we've heard the most, probably in recent times. And then there's this bigger, broader issue that we keep hearing. Mr. Miller just brought it up, himself a candidate who, you know, touched on the experience that he brings to the table.
00:19:34:18 - 00:20:10:10
DINO
But as he pointed out, we also have some candidates out there who don't have any experience running for mayor, looking to run a city, a multi-billion dollar city, and all its operations. So who are you voting for and why? 8189855735818985 Kpfk option one. They'll to take a quick break. We're going to come right back and take a few calls before we go on to our next guest.
00:20:10:12 - 00:20:26:19
MUSIC INTRO
Dennis, unto him. Oh, yes, I know the president can tell us get he was that way to do some boogie woogie at the Chicano.
00:20:26:21 - 00:20:34:16
MUSIC INTRO
Kids. But the American people.
00:20:34:18 - 00:20:38:18
MUSIC INTRO
Asian and African. African.
00:20:38:19 - 00:20:43:00
MUSIC INTRO
But it's we fun to come back.
00:20:43:02 - 00:21:08:19
DINO
Welcome back to The Signal. News, information and analysis. I'm your host, Dino. Remember, I want to hear from you all. And I know sometimes, like, we make this call out and people call in and they go on hold. And welcome to live radio, folks. And I'm going to ask you to just hang in there for a few minutes as we go to our next segment, before we open up those lines to you all and hear from you.
00:21:08:20 - 00:21:30:08
DINO
But joining me now is we're bringing back a candidate we've had before. And as I said at the opening of the show, we've invited, several candidates, some who came on some of some of who accepted, some didn't, many had conflicts. With scheduling. It's go time, you guys. In fact, my next guest was canvasing just 20 minutes ago.
00:21:30:10 - 00:21:55:00
DINO
And, you know, this is it. Final three days. Which is why we're taking the entire hour to remind everybody about the importance of voting. And one of the seats that I think is one of the more important seats that we've heard in some time is this, congressional seat, and one of those candidates is, our our next guest, doctor Monica Sanchez, an educator, advocate, candidate for Congress.
00:21:55:00 - 00:22:10:05
DINO
Doctor Sanchez has sent her to campaign on expanding opportunities, strengthening public education, and ensuring working families have a stronger voice in Washington, DC. Doctor Sanchez, welcome back to The Signal.
00:22:10:07 - 00:22:12:22
MONICA SANCHEZ
Hi, Dino. Thank you so much for having me.
00:22:12:23 - 00:22:43:07
DINO
Now, I know that you were just canvasing that 20 minutes ago, going up and down hills talking to voters and, you know, so we're going to get right to right to it so that you can get back to that hard work that you're doing. And, you know, I want to start off with, on the environmental front, you know, communities throughout Southern California continue to grapple with this environmental concerns, with the environmental concerns that plague us all, including aging, infrastructure, pollution, you know, water quality issues, the growing demand for resources.
00:22:43:09 - 00:23:07:23
DINO
And, you know, just this past week, we had this weather disastrous news, that was, taking place over in, in Orange County with the chemical plant, which was going to explode, not going to explode. So what do you see is the role of the federal government in protecting public health and addressing environmental issues, like the one we saw in Orange County?
00:23:08:01 - 00:23:10:19
DINO
And overall in general?
00:23:10:21 - 00:23:42:05
MONICA SANCHEZ
Yes. The you know, thank you so much. This is very important to me. I believe that the government's first responsibility is to protect our public health. And as we've seen with this, Trump administration, EPA, restrictions and things that were, intended to protect our communities have been lifted, and we're already seeing examples of, of these, the impacts, the real impacts to our communities.
00:23:42:06 - 00:24:22:18
MONICA SANCHEZ
And I honestly believe that, one instance is the proposals of data centers being built in our communities. And we're seeing this in southeast Orange County as well, where I believe that we are disproportionately being affected, particularly communities like ours that are working class immigrant communities, lower income communities, data centers. There's there's a number of environmental, issues that and as a matter of fact, have been studied, related to the usage of water impacts on water, impacts on on energy.
00:24:22:20 - 00:24:44:04
MONICA SANCHEZ
In addition, just like we've seen in Orange County, although the city of Garden Grove is an in my district, it's nearby. It's nearby, Los Angeles County. It's also nearby, a lot of other, working class communities. And just the environmental impact is huge. And we we cannot risk our, our public health.
00:24:44:06 - 00:25:09:00
DINO
And, you know, yeah, you know, this issue of these data centers. In fact, I was reading some of the newswires, one story in particular that that stood out to me about, a small town in Texas, rural Texas, where the town, entire town came out and said, no, we're not going to accept this. So this is, you know, this seems to be an issue that's impacting, both sides of the aisle in many locations.
00:25:09:02 - 00:25:33:23
DINO
And yet we see these things popping up again and again. Which brings us to this broader, bigger issue of trusting government and political accountability. You know, across the political spectrum, many voters express frustration with what they see as political system that often serves career politicians. We might get into that in a little bit, but more importantly, special interests and insiders rather than ordinary people.
00:25:33:23 - 00:25:52:16
DINO
And by special interests. We're talking about these large scale corporations. How do you respond to voters who feel disconnected from their elected officials and, and the need to have reforms on these practices that, you know, people are calling for improved transparency and accountability?
00:25:52:18 - 00:26:22:07
ANDREA
Yes, we've seen that. And I completely understand that trust in government is, is is very low. And and I understand why we talk about accountability. We we but we keep electing the same people, you know, recycling them into different positions. And we think we're going to see different devolved results. But I think that we we need to have a voice for this new generation of what we're going through, right now.
00:26:22:09 - 00:26:46:22
MONICA SANCHEZ
I do have experience in the local government, and I got involved because of what was going on in my community. We have water contamination. We have people's contaminants that weren't addressed for decades. And I believe and I wanted to see more access to our green space in the community where an urban working class community. And so I think that, accountability.
00:26:46:22 - 00:27:10:11
MONICA SANCHEZ
So, for instance, one thing that I've done is I signed a, I signed an agreement, I signed a pledge related to and read Washington and and Citizens United. So, for your for your, your listeners, citizens United is a legislation that basically gave, equal rights to a corporation as a human being. And I don't think that's there.
00:27:10:16 - 00:27:23:21
MONICA SANCHEZ
So that's one of the reasons why I don't accept, funding from corporate PACs. And other I don't have corporate interests. I am, my, my, my interest is in a working class community.
00:27:23:23 - 00:27:50:15
DINO
Now, doctor Sanchez, this new this California, this new 38th congressional district, which is the district that, you're, hoping to like in it encompasses a quite a range of communities, from Anaheim to Baldwin Park, Brown Commerce, parts of Cudahy, Diamond Bar, South San Jose Hills, which I actually had to look, up to see where that was.
00:27:50:17 - 00:28:12:12
DINO
Placentia, Pico Rivera, your hometown. Maywood, West Whittier, North Whittier, Yorba Linda, it's a very diverse district. And, you know, you said something that just caught my attention because this is something that we've covered here on the signal before, and we've done so with both, and understanding lens, but at the same time, a critical one.
00:28:12:17 - 00:28:56:14
DINO
And that's the issue of, of recycling politicians. Now, one of your opponents is, is could arguably be described as someone who has gone from, you know, positions, cabinet positions to, local area positions. And, you know, one of them, one of the challenges, I think, and my experience in talking to both politicians and a lot of, analysts, guests and otherwise, folks who are involved, one of the biggest challenges is that when you do have an elected official who maybe ran in the Assembly, ran in the county, ran here, ran there, and now says, I'm going to now go back here, career politicians.
00:28:56:16 - 00:29:03:02
DINO
Give us your position on the challenges with career politicians in environments like this.
00:29:03:04 - 00:29:27:13
MONICA SANCHEZ
Yeah, I, I'm in opposition to that. I support congressional term limits. There is no term limits right now in Congress. And that's why my opponent, Hilda Solis, is running because she's turned out, in the county. She, as a county supervisor, she's termed out in the Senate and the Senate Assembly. So the only place for her to go now with no term limits is Congress.
00:29:27:15 - 00:29:55:10
MONICA SANCHEZ
I don't believe, I think public service should not become a lifelong career. And there comes a point when maybe people get disconnected from people like us. The working class community. And, we've had we've heard a lot about people who are having temperaments, narcissistic temperaments, big egos and power. You know, we have many no team marches and, and we have queens here.
00:29:55:10 - 00:30:23:07
MONICA SANCHEZ
So, so I think that we need to have no queens marches, too, because, you know, there's kings and queens in this. And as I've learned in this political world, and I think that we need to have term limits. We need to hold elected officials accountable. And this is something that I speak openly about, that, we have people entrenched in the system utilizing becoming a gatekeeper, so to speak.
00:30:23:07 - 00:30:47:12
MONICA SANCHEZ
And I've experienced this myself, even in the endorsements process, as I'm running for Congress, I was blocked out from even being invited to an interview by, unions. And I don't mean speaking against it is, I Luna, endorsed my opponent in August before proposition 50 even passed, before this district even existed, before I could even file to run for this position.
00:30:47:12 - 00:31:17:08
MONICA SANCHEZ
So I'm not even having an opportunity to have a seat at the table to talk to these people about supporting me, and my perspectives on anything. Another one of the 1014 firefighters union. I emailed them phone call, spoke to representatives and was not even invited to the table. So, there is a lot of gatekeeping. There are there are, there are loyalties, so to speak, in the Democratic Party and in the party.
00:31:17:08 - 00:31:24:13
MONICA SANCHEZ
So I believe I strongly believe we need term limits, we need restrictions, and we need political accountability.
00:31:24:15 - 00:32:00:18
DINO
And political accountability, which, by the way, for our audience, who's listening? In, I had to look this up, in fact, just now. And I didn't realize this was the case. But Hilda Solis, your opponent has been in politics for a whopping 41 years, according to the US department. Website. The Department of Labor website, with her first election in 1985 and we're talking College Board, Assembly, Senate representative, House of Representatives.
00:32:00:20 - 00:32:38:16
DINO
I mean, look clear, clear, clear. Career politician who has, gone from one level to another, and more recently, our office, you know, somebody shared with our producers and team, some criticisms that came about where apparently and to be fair, this particular criticism came by way of the, county supervisor, Hilda Solis, who, incidentally, at the same time she's running for office, decided to participate in a series of food giveaways.
00:32:38:18 - 00:32:58:01
DINO
Now that was done. As I understand, through the office of the County Board of Supervisors. But it goes without saying. I think it would be an insult to suggest that our our audience doesn't, you know, doesn't see the need to perhaps question the timing of this. Are you aware of that? And what do you make of that?
00:32:58:03 - 00:33:28:11
MONICA SANCHEZ
Yes, I'm aware that one of the the striking notice as things, interesting things is that it is also these food distributions are occurring in the cities that are within the 38th Congressional District. So these are only people that potentially she is, soliciting votes, pandering votes. And we believe I believe that people need help year round. East Los Angeles is currently in Supervisor Solis and district right now.
00:33:28:13 - 00:33:49:13
MONICA SANCHEZ
That is one of the lower income communities, immigrant communities. They need a lot more resources. I think more so than even Montebello aware where, my my opponent had a food giveaway yesterday. And so I think that in a way, it is also insulting to our communities because I don't necessarily think that we need a box of food.
00:33:49:13 - 00:34:22:18
MONICA SANCHEZ
We need legislation where people can get jobs, where work, where their their wages can give them money to buy a house, afford food, and live a good life and not have to get in a, food pantry lying. In addition, another criticism is that they were only getting food if you have a car. And we know when I when I was a mom, I didn't even have a driver's license and I rode a bus, so I would not have been eligible as a student to even pick up a box of food from that, from that food line.
00:34:22:20 - 00:34:47:15
MONICA SANCHEZ
So we know that this is not, genuine charity. This is not out of her foundation, out of the kindness of her heart. This is, in fact, our taxpayers dollars and using it during the campaign season to give boxes of food to people. And it's very sad that I do recognize food is very important. And food insecurity is real, especially among students and, and, people, working class people in our community.
00:34:47:17 - 00:34:59:11
MONICA SANCHEZ
But I think we need more. We need more than just throwing the bone of a box of food. And I think that that's what we're we we need people like me to do. And I lived it. I've gone through that well.
00:34:59:13 - 00:35:29:19
DINO
And Doctor Sanchez, as we as we wrap this up, you know, we were calling we are calling this segment the Final pitch. You know, what would you say distinguishes your candidacy from your opponent? And why should voters believe you would bring a different approach to representing this district in Congress? Compared to your your competitor who, as I pointed out, has been in office some 40 some odd years now.
00:35:29:21 - 00:35:53:22
MONICA SANCHEZ
Yeah, I think I have two things. Number one, I have local experience being on the city council, serving as a mayor. I'm the one that's in the grocery store with the residents at the parks, making sure we have park space. But number two, my life experience as a mom of a young mom, you know, I used to receive, which I didn't, as I mentioned, when I was younger, I didn't have a car, a driver's license.
00:35:53:22 - 00:36:22:04
MONICA SANCHEZ
I used to ride the bus with my baby and these are just like back then in the 90s. I was, starving student. And there are many starving students and parents. Right now, and I totally get it. And I think that that's where I have an experience. My opponent, many of my opponents probably are worried about their pensions and their stocks, and I think that's why people are upset with government.
00:36:22:05 - 00:36:29:12
MONICA SANCHEZ
They're forgetting about the people and more concerned about stocks, money and pensions for themselves.
00:36:29:13 - 00:36:59:09
DINO
Dodge. Sanchez, where can we learn more? Where can our audience, the supporters of the say no news, information and analysis learn more about your candidacy. Again, we're talking with, Doctor Monica Sanchez, who is running, for the newly formed Congressional District 38. By the way, it's important, for disclosure. We did reach out to, your opponent, Hilda Solis and others.
00:36:59:11 - 00:37:14:23
DINO
And, again, we understand that right now. It's it's crunch time. And not everybody is able to respond in a in a timely fashion. But we'll continue to cover this. But that said, where can folks learn more? Give us your socials. Give us your website, give us a messenger pigeon route.
00:37:15:01 - 00:37:46:11
MONICA SANCHEZ
Yeah. Thank you so much. My most up to date information is on Instagram and Facebook at Councilwoman Underscore. Doctor Sanchez. And then my website is Doctor Monica sanchez.com. And I have a grassroots campaign. So I have three more days. We're actually getting out the vote reminding people to vote. And I want to just say that there's a lot of people holding on to their ballots, or maybe they don't know who to vote for or they don't know where to vote.
00:37:46:13 - 00:37:57:07
MONICA SANCHEZ
And that's part of what I'm doing is making sure that we get young people, working class people are Latinos, Latinos, minorities out to vote because your vote is very important.
00:37:57:09 - 00:38:10:14
DINO
Got you, Monica Sanchez, for Congress, her website, doctor Monica sanchez.com. I want to thank you for joining us once again and wish you good luck. And the, election on June 2nd.
00:38:10:16 - 00:38:12:15
MONICA SANCHEZ
Thank you. Thank you so much, Dino.
00:38:12:16 - 00:38:41:17
DINO
Take care. So, yeah, folks, you hear it here? Yeah. It's it's go time, right? The time is now. And again, I want to remind everybody that Election Day is just a few days away. Now is the time to make a plan to vote. I want to know who you're voting for. 81898557358189855735. Option one. Who are you voting for and why is there a particular race that is bringing you to the polls?
00:38:41:17 - 00:39:04:08
DINO
Is it the mayor's race? Is it a congressional race? Is it a senatorial races at a local judge race? Let me know. You know, I'm on Marc Anthony status. I need to know because I'm a cheese muscle. I like to, you know, to hear what's happening, with our audience members and why. (818) 985-5735 we do have one more candidate, but I'm going to press pause.
00:39:04:08 - 00:39:30:10
DINO
We're going to take a few calls. But only only if you're going to let us know about the campaign. Sometimes, folks, when we open up the lines 9855735. Option one, you know, we have folks who want to take advantage of being on the radio. I want to talk to us about, something else. And that is why that is precisely why, in fact, we, you know, we do have phone screeners, right?
00:39:30:10 - 00:39:51:20
DINO
We have phone screeners who, you know, start the conversation with you and say, you know, let us know what, what your comment is and what I want to talk about. My grandmother's recipe. Obviously I'm exaggerating. And and that's not what is often said to us, but, Yeah. Who are you voting for and why? And give it to us.
00:39:51:20 - 00:40:06:00
DINO
You know, you can send us an online, via the website on the show. That's kpfa.org, the signal. That's kpfa.org. The signal.
00:40:06:02 - 00:40:19:14
DINO
And we can, you know, get your perspective on who you're voting for and why. So, let's, let's go to Steven. Steven on line one. Steven, who are you voting for? What's the issue and why?
00:40:19:16 - 00:40:28:15
STEVEN
Hi. Yeah. You know, I just wanted to call in because I heard your interview there, and my my issue is with what media is doing.
00:40:28:17 - 00:40:29:19
DINO
Okay.
00:40:29:21 - 00:40:50:08
STEVEN
This morning, I automatically have my TV pops up on channel one, which is spectrum news, right? And when I walked in the room this morning, I turned on the TV, and the first thing that popped up on the screen was that three candidates and they gave the names. They said, we're leading the election race. And I thought, what the hell are they telling me that for?
00:40:50:10 - 00:41:10:05
STEVEN
Because I just filled out my ballot and I'm going to go drop it off at the, you know, at the place today. And that wasn't one of the one of the people I voted for for governor. And so I called and called Spectrum News, and I got somebody on the line there and I said, hey, you guys, what the heck are you doing?
00:41:10:05 - 00:41:17:19
STEVEN
Telling us who's leading the governor's race? Because it just popped up on the screen like it was a factual statement as opposed to.
00:41:17:19 - 00:41:38:07
DINO
So I said so. So, Stephen, what you're saying is, listen, don't lead the question or lead the audience with the suggestion, if I understand correctly, because there are folks who are, ahead on the polls, it's as if they're suggesting these are the folks that you should be voting for and not the rest. Is that is that what you're saying?
00:41:38:09 - 00:41:50:16
STEVEN
Basically, yeah. And I called them and they kind of apologized and they said they'd pass it on to their news department, said, please do, because I already filled up my ballot. I can't open it up and change it now or something.
00:41:50:16 - 00:42:11:04
DINO
So that's actually a very good point, Stephen. I appreciate it. I hadn't thought about that. You know, worth noting for our own internal team here. And although we don't cover, these issues in that manner, it's a good it's a good point. Zoe. On line three. Zoe, where are you at on this election? Are you, have you voted?
00:42:11:04 - 00:42:20:12
DINO
And if so, are you willing to share with us? Who are you voting for and why? So, are you there?
00:42:20:14 - 00:42:26:16
ZOE
Yeah. I would be voting for, But Sarah, for the governor. That's the big the big race for me.
00:42:26:16 - 00:42:27:10
DINO
Okay. Big ticket.
00:42:27:10 - 00:42:29:01
ZOE
Crazy that people.
00:42:29:03 - 00:42:34:07
DINO
Got it, I said, yeah, big ticket item. Okay. Why? Sarah?
00:42:34:09 - 00:42:42:17
ZOE
Because he has a history of working with government. The billionaire has a zero history. He's a billionaire. The problem.
00:42:42:19 - 00:42:59:22
DINO
So for you, one of the important things is to make sure that you elect somebody who has, you know, verifiable, history of actually understanding how these processes work, how these protocols and procedures function so that you have somebody who is knowledgeable in government.
00:43:00:00 - 00:43:03:05
ZOE
I would think any job would require that. Yes.
00:43:03:05 - 00:43:27:18
DINO
That is a very great point. And, you know, I'm glad you're bringing that up, because it goes without saying that these days where there is other positions in the administration. And I'm not going to say Trump is one of them, but clearly, we're talking about a lack of experience in many areas. And, you know, of course, in L.A., we are looking at the potential of having someone else who is doing precisely that with absolutely zero work experience.
00:43:27:20 - 00:43:46:22
DINO
In government, or work experience in general, from what I understand, much less government. I want to thank you. Thank you for your time and comment. Harold. Harold online for Harold. Let us know. Where are you at on the elections? Have you voted? And if not, are you voting in for who?
00:43:47:00 - 00:44:08:21
HAROLD
Yes, I'm voting for a why didn't candidate who must be pretty good. The Democratic parties are scared of them. And, the other thing is, you're one of your guests. She's running in a. I guess you say the district. That supposed to be temporary? So how come we're not going to hold, Governor Newsom, you know, to the fire?
00:44:08:23 - 00:44:12:17
HAROLD
It's a temporary, district.
00:44:12:19 - 00:44:29:08
DINO
And, Harold, you don't have to, but I was just curious. This is a moment for me to be a bit of a cheese. Also, somebody who's just kind of asking questions. But who is your your guy? Harold? Who's your right candidates names or who is it?
00:44:29:10 - 00:44:30:00
HAROLD
Well.
00:44:30:02 - 00:44:32:09
DINO
And again, you don't have to answer.
00:44:32:11 - 00:44:37:06
HAROLD
Oh, okay. Yeah. I won't because then I'd be politically biased.
00:44:37:08 - 00:44:58:19
DINO
Okay. All right. Fair. Okay. That's a fair statement. That's a fair statement. I mean, you know, these days, you know, look, I won't disagree that you would be putting out your bias, but at the same time, it's campaign season. This is exactly what a campaign's all about. People putting out their candidate who they think is the right person.
00:44:58:19 - 00:45:09:03
DINO
And why. So. But fair enough. Held. Is there any other particular. So you're doing, a writing candidate for what? Office again?
00:45:09:05 - 00:45:10:01
HAROLD
Governor.
00:45:10:03 - 00:45:15:17
DINO
For governor and any particular local office that stood out for you?
00:45:15:19 - 00:45:21:05
HAROLD
Yes. Oh, gosh. You're the guess. The person you just had on,
00:45:21:07 - 00:45:48:21
DINO
Is we just had Doctor Monica Sanchez for. Who's running for. Thank you. California's 38th congressional district. It's a new district. And her primary opponent is, the long term, long time, political, politician, Hilda Solis, who's currently also, in the county Board of Supervisors and is actually termed out, which I presume is why she's running for a new office.
00:45:48:23 - 00:45:49:14
DINO
So what about.
00:45:49:14 - 00:46:15:17
HAROLD
Her? Well, number one, she is, fantastic. Number two, is she even stated that someone is using taxpayer money for her own personal gain and the, I guess the third in, out is, Felice, have you followed her political career? Oh, my goodness gracious.
00:46:15:19 - 00:46:57:11
DINO
Well, and just to be clear, because I think what she said was that she was using she was using funds, under her current capacity as L.A. County supervisor to initiate food distribution programs, which is absolutely, okay. I think what other critics have brought up, on the socials, among other locations, that it just so happens that it's happening right now during campaign season, and it's only happening in cities that also happen to coincide with the, with the newly drawn district, which, you know, again, brings up the question, is this, something that's being done purposefully?
00:46:57:13 - 00:47:18:16
DINO
Again, there's no if certainly our project here at The Signal is not suggesting, inferring or otherwise claiming that this is an illicit activity. To the contrary, all signs point to it, that it is something that is totally legit. But again, perception is there and perception matters. And that's what the what we're in the business of when it comes down to media.
00:47:18:19 - 00:47:35:12
DINO
Harold, I want to thank you for sharing with us. And, I want to thank all of you, you know, Jasmine, do we have time for Jasmine, you guys, Jasmine. Jasmine, you're there telling me that we have time for one more call before we go to our final guest. Jasmine, you're on the line. With the signal line five.
00:47:35:12 - 00:47:39:00
DINO
Jasmine, talk to me. Who are you voting for and why?
00:47:39:01 - 00:48:06:09
JASMINE
For governor, I am voting, Stier. And the reason is because he supports Cal Care. And as we have aging population here in California and across the country, we need to make sure while the Trump administration is attacking, health care across the board, that we can take care of our aging population, we can take care of our children, that people who lose their jobs will still have coverage.
00:48:06:11 - 00:48:20:09
JASMINE
And I think universal health care is one of the biggest things that we could do for our people. A material change in making sure that people are taken care of. And California usually is a leader on a lot of issues across the nation.
00:48:20:11 - 00:48:42:13
DINO
And health care. For those of you who don't know, this happened to be across my my desk, just not even a day ago is a proposed single payer health care system in California that, if enacted, would guarantee comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for all state residents, regardless of immigration status. Free. At the point of service.
00:48:42:13 - 00:49:05:19
DINO
And despite backing from the nursing organizations, Cal Care AB 1900 unfortunately failed to advance through the state legislature just last month. In April 2026. But, Jasmine, you're supporting Stier nonetheless. And is there any local race that has stood up for you and that you are looking forward to?
00:49:05:20 - 00:49:13:18
JASMINE
Yeah, there's two actually. One is Council District number 11 on the west side, and I'm voting for Pfizer. Malik.
00:49:13:19 - 00:49:18:15
DINO
Okay. Because I was actually on our show a couple months ago. So I.
00:49:18:15 - 00:49:18:21
JASMINE
Mean.
00:49:19:02 - 00:49:20:16
DINO
Yeah, and yeah.
00:49:20:22 - 00:49:28:14
JASMINE
And and for, city comptroller, I am voting for Kenneth Mejia.
00:49:28:16 - 00:49:45:10
DINO
Okay. And Kenneth Mejia, who, helped really usher in a new era of politics for city of L.A. Particularly, you know, the, the TikTok generation young card who's really done well and getting his message across using social media. Jasmine, where are you calling us from?
00:49:45:12 - 00:49:46:03
ANDREA
Los Angeles.
00:49:46:03 - 00:49:53:17
DINO
Fantastic. Thank you for sharing with us. We look forward to, the June 2nd election. Thank you for, thank you for your time. Yeah. Great.
00:49:53:19 - 00:49:55:08
JASMINE
Yeah, of course. Bye bye.
00:49:55:10 - 00:50:18:13
DINO
So. Okay, look, as we begin to wind down, we're going to bring in our final guests for the final pitch here on our special edition of politics, Tacos and beer, the final pitch edition. And again, we're bringing back candidates. Those who accepted, those who were able to join us and talk about, their candidacy now on the eve of the June 2nd election.
00:50:18:15 - 00:50:29:03
DINO
And my next guest, who's running for, senatorial seat is, candidate Sara Rascon. Sara, welcome back to the signal.
00:50:29:05 - 00:50:31:02
SARA
Hello. Happy to be here.
00:50:31:04 - 00:50:38:08

So, Sara, the final pitch. Give it to us. Why are you the person for this seat?
00:50:38:10 - 00:51:17:12
SARA
Hi, Sara Rascon, I am the communities and environmental candidate in my race. Armando, I not only grew up in this district, raised in El Sereno and the struggle of a working class family with very deep roots. I am the only candidate in my race who has worked at every level of government, who has worked in the state legislature, and actually served, I would say easily 80% of this district that spans East LA city Paris, Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, northeast L.A., Eagle Rock, Highland Park, all the way to Los, you have Koreatown, a sliver of Larchmont, and I'm sure missing a few neighborhoods in between.
00:51:17:14 - 00:51:45:18
SARA
You know, we have 850,000 residents. It's quite large. And like I said, I have been here in the trenches with our communities and I, you know, didn't want to sit around and accept, a status quo corporate Democrat that's going to be influenced by lobbyists in Sacramento. I truly am seeking to go to take on, you know, special interests and address things like affordability, health insurance, as the previous speaker mentioned or as was mentioned in the conversation.
00:51:45:21 - 00:52:14:21
SARA
Car insurance, home insurance, our rates continue to go up. That's a lobby and a special interest as well, and also expand opportunities for our youth so that they are prepared for the workforce. Internships, apprenticeships, which the state can certainly help our youth, and create new programs and opportunities. And lastly, you know, I do want to say, obviously environmental protection, environmental justice and implementing new parks and open spaces in our communities, which I'm deeply passionate about.
00:52:14:21 - 00:52:16:12
SARA
It's those who know me.
00:52:16:14 - 00:52:31:17
DINO
And, you know, you're at this particular district Senate district 26 is perhaps one of the most diverse, from the outskirts, out on Atwater Village to Los Feliz to Pico Union, to the city of Vernon, which I think has like 20 people,
00:52:31:19 - 00:52:33:10
SARA
You know.
00:52:33:12 - 00:53:00:12
DINO
East L.A., Montecito Heights. I mean, it's a very, very diverse district with so many different communities. You know, in fact, I'm looking at them now, large, Larchmont, little Armenia, historic Filipino town, Hancock Park, Eagle Park. You know, what's the one thing that brings or binds all of these communities together? What's the one thing that you're hearing when you're out there campaigning?
00:53:00:14 - 00:53:25:14
SARA
You know, I would say affordability and quality of life are the biggest issues. Like I said earlier, I'm in the trenches and I ask people every opportunity I get, what is your biggest priority? And you know, we are we are all here working, commuting, living and just wanting to have a good life and expect government to provide the most basic resources and services.
00:53:25:15 - 00:53:34:13
SARA
And that's what I'm here to do, truly, to be a public servant, as I've been throughout my career, and help people navigate government and ensure that government is working for everyday people.
00:53:34:15 - 00:53:50:01
DINO
Sarah, as we close out, give us the socials, give us the website. You got a few days left. Somebody might be listening and say, you know what, I'm done. Let me go. Reach out to her and and help out. And if so, where do they, find out more? And how do they get Ahold of you?
00:53:50:03 - 00:54:15:16
SARA

00:54:15:16 - 00:54:24:16
SARA
So it's an honor to be it magmatic progressive community candidate that's truly here to be of service to this district as I've been.
00:54:24:18 - 00:54:34:19
DINO
